Mission Statement

The mission of the Newaygo Land Conservancy is to protect the natural diversity and beauty of Newaygo in northern Michigan by preserving significant land and scenic areas, and fostering appreciation and understanding of the environment.

History

Since 2007, the Newaygo Land Conservancy was established to purchase or acquire (through donations) and protect large tracts of land in critical areas for future generations to enjoy. We were formed by caring citizens and a small group of volunteers. We are funded by families, local businesses and individuals like you.

The Newaygo Land Conservancy is a broad coalition of individuals, families, and businesses who agree that the acquisition and protection of natural land is important if we are to retain the quality of life which makes northern Michigan so attractive. The Newaygo Land Conservancy is supported entirely by people who willingly donate their time, talent, and financial support to protect irreplaceable natural land. The Newaygo Land Conservancy represents people's willingness to put their money where their heart is to protect natural land. We seek to adorn our communities, as they grow, with beautiful open spaces. Just as an architect uses plantings and gardens to add to the aesthetic beauty of a building, we work to provide scenic views, open spaces, and wildlife habitat to enhance our communities.

There are many different ways in which you and the Newaygo Land Conservancy can work together to protect your land. Whether you want to maintain ownership, sell, or donate your land for protection, explore all of your options for permanently protecting the scenic and conservation values of your property.

What about Deed Restrictions? A land owner who depends upon deed restrictions to protect property will probably be disappointed. The most serious disadvantage to deed restrictions is that no third party can be designated to assume monitoring and enforcement responsibility. The law limits who can enforce the restrictions and for how long. For example, if you insert restrictions in your deed and then sell or give the land away without retaining land nearby, your restrictions may not be enforceable by you or your successors!
